# Trekit

> Trekit is a digital push-pin map: the cork world map on the wall, made personal and alive. You pin the places you have been on a living map of the Earth, add a note to each pin, and keep it for years. Bring years of trips in from Google Maps Timeline or your photos, plan the next trip, and follow people whose travels you trust. Your map is your profile at trekit.app/@you.

## What it is

Mark where you've been. Share with friends. Plan your next adventure.

- A world map built from real imagery (NASA Blue Marble and Black Marble night lights, Natural Earth) with the world's wonders as postcards.
- Every place you mark shows on your map. Your link is your profile: your name, one line about you, and your photo if you choose.
- The map is alive: the real day/night line, sunrise and sunset at the wonders, wildlife people photographed in the last hour, rocket launches, the aurora forecast, festivals and migrations happening today. Good news only: no disasters, no news feed.
- Three tabs: Home (what the people you follow have added lately, and travellers to follow; add their places to your map), Discover (what's happening on Earth today, and places from public profiles) and Map (your map, your profile and your trips: past trips as a journal, the next one with its stops, dates and things to do, planned together with friends).
- Following without the noise: no likes, no comments, no ads, no algorithm. Come back when you want to remember a trip or plan the next one.

## Who can see your map

Every account gets trekit.app/@handle. Its owner picks who sees it: "Anyone with the link" (the default: the address carries a secret key; not in Google, search or feeds), "Public" (people can find and follow you; in Google unless switched off) or "Only me". Signed out, "Share my map" makes a read-only copy at https://trekit.app/m/<id> instead.

## Put your map on your blog

From the app (Map → your name → Settings → Embed on your site): a picture (an image wrapped in a link, works on WordPress, Substack and Medium) or a live map in an iframe, wide or square, light or dark. It shows the countries you've been to, a pin per place and how many, and updates as you travel. Public maps embed at https://trekit.app/embed/<handle>; a link-only map gets its own embed code that can be replaced; private maps show nothing. More: https://trekit.app/embed

## Country pages

https://trekit.app/places lists 60 countries; each page (https://trekit.app/places/<country>) shows the places travellers go most on a map, with a short intro and how many people on Trekit have been.

## Who it is for

People who already track their travels: push-pin map owners, the friend everyone asks for the Google Doc, travel bloggers, digital nomads, study-abroad and gap-year students. Anyone who wants one beautiful, personal record of where they have been, and a way to show it on their own site.

## How it works

1. Bring it in: import your Google Maps Timeline or iPhone photos (read in your browser), or search and pin.
2. Plan the next one with friends: invite them by name, @name, email or a link; everyone edits the same trip; afterwards, tick what you made it to.
3. Follow and share: claim trekit.app/@you, make it public if you like, and follow friends and travellers.

## Status

- Live today: the map at https://trekit.app/map, free to use, every feature open to everyone, no account needed; places are saved in your browser; "Share my map" makes a read-only copy at https://trekit.app/m/<id>.
- Live: optional sign-in (Google or emailed link) so your map follows you across devices; up to 3 photos per place (signed in); places marked been, want to go or planning; several map styles; zoom from the world down to cities; import from Google Maps Timeline, Google Maps Saved (Takeout), photo locations or a pasted list, all read in the browser; public profiles at https://trekit.app/@<handle> with follow; a place page for each search result with photos and who you follow has been there.
- Also live: planning a trip together (invite friends by name, @name, email or a link; everyone edits the same trip; optional daily emails when the others change the plan; after the trip, tick the places you made it to); "Now in" on your profile; a cover photo on your profile from your own place photos or Wikipedia; map themes; Map art on any style, including Sketchbook, hand-drawn landmarks, animals and food of many countries at their real places, and a pin picker to give any place one of those drawings as its icon.

## Privacy

No selling of data, no ads, no ad trackers. The marketing pages count visits with Ahrefs Web Analytics (no cookies; a rough country from the IP address, which is not stored); the map app and shared links have no analytics. Signed out: your map stays in your browser and there are no cookies. Making a link (Share my map) stores a copy (places, notes, dates, trips, your name) in our database (Neon, Frankfurt, EU), readable by anyone with the link; "Remove link" deletes it. Signing in is optional (Google or an emailed link, no passwords): we store your email, name and picture if from Google, and your map, and set two cookies (a session cookie and a trek_account=1 flag), both removed on sign-out.
